② The Japanese-era house street.

Guryongpo Modern History and Culture Street preserves wooden houses built by Japanese fishing families during the colonial period. It later became a filming location for the drama When the Camellia Blooms (동백꽃 필 무렵), and the café set from the show still stands there.

The practical version of all this is that Guryongpo Market is about 5 minutes by car from the hill above the harbour, and the fish street, the beach and the film set are all inside ten.

The reason a week here does not run out of things to do is that Guryongpo sits between two very different cities, and the coastal road connects both.

① Gyeongju (경주), roughly 45 minutes south.

The old Silla capital is an open-air museum of royal tombs, temples and the Gyeongju National Museum, and Hwangnidan-gil (황리단길) is where everyone eats afterwards. Gampo (감포), on the way down, is a smaller harbour worth a stop of its own.

② Pohang city centre, roughly 40 minutes north.

Jukdo Market (죽도시장) is the largest traditional market on Korea's east coast, and the Space Walk (스페이스워크) in Hwanho Park is a giant steel track you can actually climb and walk along, free of charge.
