T-money vs Climate Card Seoul: Which Transit Card Should You Get?

"There are two different cards at the airport kiosk β€” which one do I actually need?"

"Is the Climate Card worth it if I'm only here for two weeks?" "Does T-money work outside Seoul, and does the Climate Card?" "Can I use either card on buses, the subway, and taxis?"

Picking up a transit card is one of the first practical decisions you make when arriving in Seoul. For most of Seoul's history, the answer was simple: T-money. But since 2023, Seoul Metropolitan Government introduced the κΈ°ν›„λ™ν–‰μΉ΄λ“œ (Climate Card), an unlimited monthly transit pass that changes the math for people who use public transport heavily. This guide breaks down both cards so you can pick the right one before you tap through the first gate.

What Is T-money?

T-money is Korea's standard rechargeable transit card. It works like an electronic wallet you top up with cash and tap to pay each time you board. It's been around since 2004 and is accepted on virtually every form of public transport in the country.

Where T-money works: Seoul Metro (all lines), Seoul city buses (all routes including night buses), Korail (intercity rail, though you'll need to buy tickets separately for express trains), taxis in Seoul (most accept T-money), convenience store purchases (at GS25, CU, 7-Eleven, and others), and most major transit systems in other Korean cities including Busan, Daegu, Daejeon, and Incheon.

How T-money pricing works: Each ride is charged individually. As of 2025, the base subway fare in Seoul is KRW 1,500 (~USD 1.10) per journey for adults with T-money. Buses run at a similar rate. One major benefit is the transfer discount: if you transfer between subway and bus (or bus to bus) within 30 minutes, you only pay for additional distance, not a new base fare. This can significantly reduce costs for multi-leg commutes.

Where to buy T-money: Convenience stores (GS25, CU, 7-Eleven), subway station vending machines, and some tourist information centers. The card itself costs about KRW 2,500–4,000 to purchase. You can top it up at any subway station vending machine, at convenience store counters, or using the T-money app with a Korean phone number.

What Is the Climate Card (κΈ°ν›„λ™ν–‰μΉ΄λ“œ)?

The Climate Card is Seoul Metropolitan Government's unlimited monthly transit pass, launched in January 2024. For a flat monthly fee, you can ride Seoul's subway and city buses as many times as you want within Seoul.

Two versions:

  • Without Ttareungyi (Seoul's bike share): KRW 62,000/month (~USD 46)

  • With Ttareungyi included: KRW 65,000/month (~USD 48)

Where the Climate Card works: Seoul Metro lines 1–9, the Ara Waterway ferry, Seoul city buses (regular, express, and night buses), and Ttareungyi bike share if you choose the upgraded version.

Where the Climate Card does NOT work: This is the critical limitation. The Climate Card is only valid within Seoul city limits on Seoul-operated transit. It does not work on Korail (regular trains), the Airport Railroad (AREX), Sinbundang Line, GTX lines, buses operated by Gyeonggi Province (경기도 λ²„μŠ€), or transit outside Seoul. If you're visiting Incheon, taking day trips to Suwon, or traveling via the AREX to/from Incheon Airport, you'll need a separate card or cash.

How to get a Climate Card: Climate Cards are sold at subway station vending machines throughout Seoul. You register and top up the monthly fee using a Korean debit/credit card or (at some machines) cash. International credit cards may not work at all machines β€” cash or a Korean card is more reliable.

The Break-Even Calculation

The decision really comes down to how many trips you'll take per day and how long you're staying.

At KRW 1,500 per trip with T-money, the Climate Card (at KRW 62,000) breaks even at roughly 41–42 trips per month β€” about 1.4 trips per day. If you're commuting to work or moving around Seoul regularly, that's an easy threshold to clear. If you ride the subway twice a day on weekdays only, you hit roughly 44 trips in a month β€” already past break-even.

T-money is probably better for you if:

  • Your stay is less than 3 weeks

  • You'll be making day trips outside Seoul (to Suwon, Nami Island, Incheon, etc.)

  • You're arriving or departing via Incheon Airport on the AREX

  • You use taxis regularly

  • You're also visiting other Korean cities

Climate Card is probably better for you if:

  • You're staying in Seoul for a full month or more

  • You commute daily within Seoul

  • You won't need transit outside Seoul

  • You want the simplicity of not tracking individual fares

  • You want access to Ttareungyi bike share

Practical Tips

Arrival tip: If you're taking the AREX from Incheon Airport into central Seoul, you'll need either T-money or a single-journey ticket β€” the Climate Card won't work on the airport train. Buy T-money at the airport before you even board.

Recharging T-money: Subway vending machines are the most reliable option. Look for machines labeled "μΆ©μ „" (recharge). You can top up in KRW 5,000 increments. Minimum useful balance is about KRW 3,000 before gates stop letting you through.

If your T-money balance runs low mid-journey: Subway gates will let you through with a negative balance up to KRW -500. You'll need to pay the deficit the next time you recharge.

Both cards can be registered: T-money and the Climate Card can be linked to an app for balance tracking. However, both require a Korean phone number for full registration features.

Tourists and the Climate Card: As of mid-2025, the Climate Card is also available in a version compatible with foreign payment methods at certain subway vending machines, though availability varies. If you're having trouble, staff at major stations (Seoul, Gangnam, Hongik University) can help.

Can you have both? Yes β€” many people carry T-money as a backup, particularly for airport trips, taxis, and travel outside Seoul, even if they primarily use a Climate Card day-to-day.

Subway Access and Where You Stay in Seoul

Whichever card you choose, one of the biggest factors in transit costs is simply where your accommodation is. Seoul's subway network is excellent, but a 20-minute walk to the nearest station adds up quickly β€” both in time and in taxis.

The best short-term rentals for subway-dependent travelers are within 5 minutes' walk of a Line 2, Line 5, or Line 9 station. Line 2 is the green circular loop that connects Hongdae, Sinchon, Ewha, Sindorim, Guro Digital Complex, Gangnam, and Jamsil β€” covering virtually every major district foreigners visit. Line 9 offers express service to the airport and Gangnam in a fraction of typical journey time.

Liveanywhere lists short-term rentals across Seoul with a minimum stay of one week. All utilities are included in the nightly price, contracts are electronic, and the security deposit averages KRW 300,000 (~USD 222), fully refundable.

Guro Digital Complex Station (κ΅¬λ‘œλ””μ§€ν„Έλ‹¨μ§€μ—) is on Line 2 β€” the green circle that covers most of Seoul. From here: Gangnam is 15 minutes, Hongdae is 20 minutes, and Seoul Station is 25 minutes. Three minutes on foot from front door to platform.

The unit is a 9th-floor top-floor studio, so no noise from above. City and skyline views. Smart TV with OTT access. Air conditioning and full kitchen. Self check-in.

Nearby: coffee shop on the ground floor of the building, Lotte Cinema next door, supermarket, convenience store, library within 5 minutes on foot. Boramae Park (보라맀곡원) for walking and exercise is accessible by foot or one subway stop.

This location is well-placed for Transit Card math: Gangnam (2 stops on Line 2), Yeouido (nearby via transfer), and express options to the airport all within easy reach β€” making both T-money and the Climate Card effective here.
